Esther Ping Ren Lo Wu was born in Xiamen, China on July 5, 1934. Her parents were Lo Yi Tian and Yi Chu Lu. She is survived by her husband Samuel Wu, her daughter Rebecca Bakeman (James), Elizabeth Wu (Gene Fishel), and Sarah Wu (Tom Coughlin). She lost her mother as an infant and was raised by her missionary aunt Lo Su Wen who was martyred in Kalimantan, Indonesia.  Her father, aunts and uncles were educators in Indonesia prior to WWII and thereafter. She joined her family in Indonesia in her early teens and was in the first graduating class of Southeast Asia Bible College in Malang, Indonesia. In 1955, she came to the US to attend Southwest Baptist University and graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University with a Bachelor of Science. She married her devoted husband Samuel in 1959.  Esther received two master’s degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Texas and was the first recipient of a doctorate degree from Liberty University in Lynchburg,Virginia, her home for over 50 years.

Esther served the Lord faithfully all her life in the Chinese community and at Beulah Baptist Church.  A gifted and much-loved teacher and speaker, she inspired countless people in several states, and later with Samuel, as a guest professor in two seminaries in Europe, as well as in China, Indonesia, and Australia. Besides being an outstanding singer, she was also an accomplished artist who employed a special technique to create life-sized portraits. She was a most gracious hostess and exceptional home chef, delighting innumerable guests from around the world with her tireless hospitality. She traveled extensively over five continents bringing joy to the many people she met. An exceptional daughter-in-law, she provided her mother-in-law with faithful loving care for two decades. Above all, she was a most devoted wife and mother who dedicated her energy and brilliant mind to every detail of her family’s lives. We will be forever grateful for the legacy she left as we look forward to our heavenly reunion.
