Ethel Frances Cauley Keys, 90, of Lynchburg died Friday, August 24, 2012, at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
She was born October 11, 1921, in Bath County, a daughter of the late William Benjamin and Mabel Clare Cauley. She was educated in the Bath County Public Schools and earned Bachelor and Masters degrees from Madison College (James Madison University). She taught school in Bath and Augusta Counties for thirty-eight years.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Ralph C. Keys and two brothers, William B. Cauley Jr. and Robert N. Cauley.
She is survived by two daughters, Melinda M. Younger and Carol Jean Moore of Lynchburg, a son, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Granville (Jeff) M. Keys and his wife Lisa of Maryville, Ill.; two grandchildren: Alexandra E. Keys of Manchester, Mo.and William R. Keys and his wife Jamie of Belleville, Ill; a sister Mitzy C. Thompson of Millersville, Md. and a sister-in-law Marjorie P. Cauley of Fitchburg, Mass.
During her years in Bath County she was an active participant at Windy Cove Presbyterian Church and served as Worthy Grand Matron of the Bath County Chapter of the Eastern Star. She moved to Churchville in Augusta County in 1963 and became an active member of Loch Willow Presbyterian Church. She served as Moderator of Presbyterian Women of the Shenandoah Presbytery and also served as a Commissioner to the Presbyterian General Assembly. In 2005 she moved to Lynchburg and made her home with her daughter Melinda Younger.
Ethel Frances was known for her soft-spoken humor, her sense of fairness and justice, her philosophical discussions on the condition of mankind, her passion for lifelong learning, her unconditional love for family and friends, and her faith. She enjoyed her daily crossword and she loved a good story whether it was from her avid reading or from family history.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Reverend Reed Hopkins at Loch Willow Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Following the memorial there will be a graveside service at Woodland Cemetery at 12:30 pm in Bath County.
