Eugene Hobert Farley, Jr.

November 4, 1934 — December 9, 2016

Eugene Hobart Farley, Jr., devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, credit union champion, community servant, and Virginia gentleman, went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 9, 2016 at the age of 82.

Born on Sunday, November 4, 1934 in Blackstone, VA, Gene was the son of the late Eugene Hobert Farley and the late Mary Wooten Farley.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Zehmer Farley, his son William Harrison Farley, of Huddleston, his grandsons, William Matthew Farley and his wife, Charlotte, of Lynchburg, Andrew Paulson Farley and his wife, Janelle, of Raleigh, and 2 two great grandsons, Liam and Griffin.

His favorite quote came from Zig Ziglar who said, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”  That is the way Gene Farley lived his life.  After serving honorably in the Army National Guard, which afforded his way through 8 years of college, he began a long, impactful career in credit unions, starting with Greyhound Credit Union in Richmond.  Shortly thereafter, he served for 40 years at the Virginia Credit Union League where he was President/CEO.   Through his visionary, strategic leadership, he organized 35 credit unions in Virginia and served in key leadership roles both nationally and internationally through the Credit Union National Association, the World Council of Credit Unions, the CUNA Mutual Group, U.S. Central Credit Union, the Association of Credit Union League Executives (ACULE), the Credit Union Foundation, the Filene Research Institute, Virginia League Corporate Federal Credit Union, and Virginia League Central (Beacon) Credit Union.  For his years of distinguished service he was honored in 2000 with the Herb Wegner Lifetime Achievement Award and upon his retirement, a new national award, the “Eugene Farley League Leadership Award” was established in conjunction with ACULE and his lifelong friend and former CUNA Mutual President/CEO, Dr. Richard M. Heins.

Gene was also deeply devoted to his community and was a faithful member of Timberlake United Methodist Church for 53 years where he served as its Board Chairman, Trustee and Worship Leader for many years, and led the Finance, Building, and Pastor Parish Relations Committees, in addition to being a Sunday School teacher, Early Bird Choir member, and representative at the annual Virginia Methodist Conference.  He was an active volunteer in Boy Scout Troop 48 and as an adult, was inducted into Order of the Arrow.  Gene was also a 32 degree Mason in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Marshall Lodge No. 39.  He also helped to start a home for Heart Havens in Lynchburg.

But his greatest joy was his family.  Throughout his life he loved special times traveling, being at Smith Mountain Lake, and at home surrounded by and helping those he loved, and was always there for any activities they were participating in (usually behind the camera or video recorder).  In addition, he was a loyal Washington Redskins fan, as well as an avid golfer, fisherman, gardener, and cook.

Billy Graham once said, “The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.”  This is the legacy of Eugene H. Farley, Jr.

A Celebration of Gene’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 12, 2016, at Timberlake United Methodist Church, with Rev. Brad McMullen, Rev. C. Douglas Pillow, and Rev. Dr. Tom Bryant officiating. A visitation will be held following the service from 12:00 (noon) to 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery in Blackstone, VA.

A special thanks to Sylvia Morris for all of her loving care over many years as well as to Vernica Disroe and many others who have been supportive of Gene during the past few months.  Also a big thanks to Jessie and those at Gentle Shepard Hospice for the incredible care provided.
