Eugene “Gene” Davidson Maddera, aged 98, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, at The Summit. He was the beloved husband of the late Doris Overstreet Maddera.
Born on April 13, 1927, in Bedford, Virginia, Eugene was the son of the late Eugene Thomas Maddera and Christine Brown Maddera. Gene was a proud Army veteran. He dedicated his career to Babcock and Wilcox, where he served as an accounting clerk before his retirement in 1990.
Gene was an active member of the community and held membership at Calvary Baptist Church in Lynchburg, previously being a long-time member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He contributed to various local organizations, volunteering at Lynchburg General Hospital, Daily Bread, and Meals on Wheels. In his later years, Gene discovered a passion for painting, particularly artwork inspired by birds, and enjoyed participating in Bible study.
He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Patricia Maddera of Forest; granddaughter, Sara Johnson and husband, Randy of Vinton; grandson, Kyle Maddera and wife Debora of Wilmington, NC; and great-grandchildren, Levi and Mia Johnson, of Vinton. He was preceded in death by his son, Barrye Eugene Maddera, as well as his parents.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home, Friday, April 25, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with inurnment to follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Calvary Baptist Church, Interfaith Outreach, and Meals on Wheels.
