Eugene Owen Meeks
January 12, 1944 — February 13, 2019
Eugene “Gene” Owen Meeks, 75, of Madison Heights, died at home, Wednesday February 13, 2019, after a long battle with cancer. He was the loving husband of Deborah Gail Smith Meeks, for 38 years.
Born on January 12, 1944, in Lynchburg, Eugene was a son of the late Howard Lindsey Meeks and the late Beatrice Mitchell Meeks.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother Roger Meeks.
In addition to his wife, Gene is survived by his children, Donna Burley and her husband, James, Crystal Sanchez and her fiancé, Jonathan Swift, and Jeannie Bruce and her husband, Keith, a step son, Richard Smith and his wife, Tanya, grandchildren, Krissy Burley, Kyle Sanchez, Bobbi Jean Meeks, Evan Swift, Keithen Bruce, Tyler Smith, Meagan Smith, and Jason Smith, a brother, H. L. Meeks, and his wife, Debbie, a special friend Joshua Sanchez, and numerous nephews, and cousins.
Gene attended E.C. Glass High School and finished his education in the U.S. Army. He served as a combat engineer and was stationed in the Far East. Later Gene worked at Tampa General Hospital, where he formed lifelong friendships with several wonderful people. He finally came back to Lynchburg and worked at VDOT and transferred to DOT until his retirement.
Gene loved fishing, playing pool and his Washington Redskins. He also took great pride in working on his land.
A Celebration of Eugene’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on February 20, 2019 at Tharp, Madison Heights, with Pastor J. D. Surbaugh officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.
In lieu of flowers, Gene requested that memorial contributions be made to Temple Christian School, 4465 S. Amherst HWY, Madison Heights, VA 24572.
The family would especially like to thank Gentle Shepherd Hospice. God truly sent us some “angels” to help take care of Gene.
