Eva Smith Burger died peacefully in her sleep at NHC Nursing Home in Murrell’s Inlet, South Carolina at the age of 93. She was born in Paint Rock, AL and was a lifelong resident of Huntsville. Eva retired from the Army as an Executive Assistant in 1980.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, and her husband, Mel Burger. She is survived by her step daughters, Wanda Slothower and husband Jack of Pawley’s Island, South Carolina, and Linda Read and husband Bill of Plant City, Florida; and sons, Ken Burger and wife Linda of Big Island, VA, and Larry Burger and wife Cindy of Huntsville, Alabama.
Her grandchildren whom she cherished are: Billy Read (deceased), Wanda Read, Kathy Cheri, Vivian Hunsley and husband Ray, Sophia Adams and husband Randy, Lynn Besch and husband Ted, Melinda Cohan and husband Dave, Stephanie Burger, Mike Burger and wife Lynn, Ben Burger and wife Jessica, and John Burger. She also has many great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nephews and nieces, whom she all loved.
Eva loved genealogy, and published three books documenting her extensive research on family history. While living in Huntsville, she was very active in Hunt’s Spring Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, holding many offices including Regent. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and actively supported the Heritage Room (now Special Collections Department) at the Huntsville Public Library.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date, with Rev. Beth Thomason, Pastor of Madison Christian Church officiating. (www.laughlinservice.com)
