Evelyn Henning

Evelyn Henning, 92, of Lynchburg, Virginia, died Sunday, March 3, 2013, in Cape Coral, Florida, at the home of her son Michael and daughter-in law Rhonda Henning, where she had been residing for the past several months. 

Mrs. Henning was born on August 14, 1920, in Lynchburg, the daughter of the late Walter S. and the late Myra Higginbotham Martin.

She was the devoted wife of Gerald F. \"Jerry\" Henning for 54 years, until his passing in 1999.

Evelyn worked as a secretary for the government in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, before her marriage to Jerry in 1945.  When Jerry began working for General Services Administration, the couple moved to Chicago, and eventually settled in Hanover Park, Illinois, to raise their 3 sons. Mrs. Henning was a long time employee of the Village of Hanover Park, where she served as Office Manager at the community Village Hall. Evelyn and Jerry retired in 1979, and fulfilled one of Evelyn\"™s lifelong dreams by moving back to Lynchburg, Virginia. Evelyn and her husband Jerry were faithful members of Trinity Methodist Church, and eventually joined the congregation of Chestnut Hill United Methodist, when the two churches merged in 1985. She loved serving at Chestnut Hill as the head of the Friends Who Care Program.

She is survived by 3 sons, David Henning (Robin), of Traverse City, Michigan, Michael Henning (Rhonda), of Cape Coral, Florida, Patrick Henning (Jean) of Genoa, Illinois; six grandchildren, Angie Henning Garcia (Patricio), Brian Henning (Kira), Jordan Henning, Oriana Vargas, Noel Henning (Liz), Heather Henning Randall (Ford); five great grandchildren, Adalyz and Ariela Garcia, Eva Henning, Layla and Charley Henning; her sister Beryl E. Martin; sister-in-law, Margaret Martin; special caregivers, Nancy Hamlet and Trish Gwaltney; numerous, wonderful nieces and nephews; and many helpers and special friends who played an important role in her life and care.  

Evelyn was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jerry; sister, Christine Martin Graham; brother-in-law, George \"Billy\" Graham; brother, Walter Scott Martin, Jr.; sister-in-law Eleanor Martin; and her brother, Dr. Earl D. Martin.

 

A service celebrating Evelyn\"™s life will be held at 2.00pm on Friday, March 8, 2013, at Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, 4660 Fort Avenue, Lynchburg.  The family will receive friends one hour prior at the service.  Interment will following at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
