Evelyn Howland Burnop

Evelyn Howland Burnop, 92, of Smith Mountain Lake, passed away Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Runk & Pratt Smith Mountain Lake Retirement Village.  She was predeceased by her loving husband of 71 years, George T. Burnop, on September 22, 2013.

 

Born in Utica, NY on December 27, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Frank O. and Eloise B. Howland.  She was also preceded in death by her twin sister, Carolyn J. Blackstock and two brothers, Frank O. Howland, Jr. and Jared L. Howland. 

 

Evelyn grew up in Utica and on May 27, 1942 married George T. Burnop.  She was an Army wife for over 30 years and lived in many places in the United States as well as Japan, Okinawa and Germany.  She and George spent their retirement years in the Monterey Bay area of California and then Dataw Island, SC before moving to Smith Mountain Lake in 1994 to be near their daughter in Danville.

 

Evelyn was an accomplished self-taught artist and enjoyed working with her hands in many ways such as cooking, knitting and crocheting, repairing small appliances around the house, and many other arts and crafts.  She loved playing bridge with her neighbors on Windmere Point until her health began to decline. 

 

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce B. Lanoue (Allen);  three grandchildren, Kevin A. Lanoue of Harrisonburg, Eric G. Lanoue (Winema) of Christiansburg, and Brady M. Lanoue (Joanna) of Seoul, S. Korea; eight great-grandchildren, Margaret Evelyn and Allison Leigh Lanoue of Harrisonburg, Ezra R., Zebulon A., and Vivian Lanoue of Christiansburg, and Nathaneal A., Simeon J., and Isaac B. Lanoue of Seoul, S. Korea; one brother-in-law, Robert H. Burnop  (Barbara) of Whitesboro, NY;  one step-sister, Lyndy Smith of Orlando, FL.; and her beloved cat, Rhondie.

 

A celebration of her and George\"™s lives will be held in the near future. Joint interment services will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at 608 Westridge Drive, Danville VA 24541.   Memorial donations may be made to Seven Hills Hospice, 2250 Murrell Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24501 or Franklin County Humane Society, 18401 Virgil H.
