On Saturday, July 14, 2018, Evelyn Thorpe Barbour, 84, received her angel wings surrounded by her family, at Heartland Nursing Home, in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Evelyn was born May 1, 1934, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to the late Viola Harvey Thorpe Jennings (Albert) and the late Walter Rosser Thorpe.
Evelyn was preceded in death by one son, Melvin “Blukey” Barbour Jr.; one brother, Phillip Thorpe; one sister, Phyllis Morgan; one great-great granddaughter, Indie Pannell; two sons-in-law, George Martin and Dwight Thomas; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Stanley and Virginia Barbour; one brother-in-law, Overton Barbour (Vivian); In-laws, Theodore and Gertrude Barbour; and one devoted niece, Beatrice Barbour;
She is survived by her loving husband Melvin Dillard Barbour, Sr.; son, Gregory Barbour (Denita); three daughters, Celeste Paige, Marva “Denise” Martin, and Viola “Weeda” Thomas; grandchildren, Shelby Jackson (Thomas), Yasmine Radcliff, Melva Barbour, Crystal Johnson (Javor), Adrian Thornhill (Murrell), Michelle Davis, Andre West, Kerry Paige (Tomeca), Derek Paige (Tina), Myshia Barbour, Arnika Barbour, Deshawn Hall, and Jennifer Cranford; twenty-three great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one brother, Albert Jennings (Deborah); two brothers-in-law, Aubrey Barbour (Helen), and Robert Barbour (Janice); three sisters-in-law, Hattie Hicks, Josephine Johnson, and Elizabeth Barbour; devoted niece, Virginia Williams (Bobby); and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Evelyn was happily married for 64 years. She really enjoyed family and meeting new people, touching many lives along the way. Evelyn received her Food Manager’s degree and worked as a Dietary Manager throughout the years. Evelyn was a loyal employee of The City of Lynchburg for most of those years. She retired, not once but twice, from the city, returning to work part-time the next week after her first retirement. Evelyn loved her co-workers and adopted everyone she met as family.
The family will be receiving family and friends at Marva Martin’s house. They will also receive family and friends from 6 until 7 p.m., Friday, July 20, 2018, at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, Virginia. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 21, 2018, at Thomas Road’s Pate Chapel on 100 Mountain View Road, Lynchburg, Virginia. The family will gather at the Pate Chapel at 12:30 p.m., prior to the service.
A special thanks to the staff at Heartland Nursing Home, Centra Hospice, Dr. John MacNeill and staff at Alan B Pearson Regional Cancer Center, Dr. David Cassada, Taylor Garbey, and the staff at Centra Surgical Specialist and Dr. Ian Smithson, for the excellent care that was given to our loved one. We would also like to thank Thomas Road Baptist Church for their support and generosity at this time of need.
