Florence Applin McArthur Smith died Thursday, February 7, 2013, at the age of 90 at Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She was born on July 17, 1922 in Glenbuchat, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Miss Smith was predeceased by her parents George and Mary McArthur Smith, her sister Jane (jean) McArthur Smith, her brothers John Frank, Charles Turner Smith, George Smith, Jr., Robert Williamson Smith, Duncan McArthur Smith, James Borthwick Smith, and nephew Charles Turner Smith, Jr.
Her entire family immigrated to the United States and arrived in New York City on July 5, 1925. From there they were briefly in Ardmore, PA, with family and then on to Lynchburg where they settled permanently. She leaves to mourn her passing her nephew George Peyton Smith Phillips of Virginia Beach, VA; nieces; Gail Dare Smith Morris (and Husband Preston Morris); and Joan Elizabeth Smith Corder-Mabe (and husband Ralph Mabe), of Chesterfield, VA; Jean Byrd Smith of Harrisonburg, VA; and Rowland Smith of Front Royal, VA; Mary McArthur Smith Harper (widow of Layne Harper) of Desoto, TX; Jacqueline Kay Smith Hobbs (and husband Benjamin Hobbs) of Hertford, NC; and Jean McArthur Smith Salyer (and Al Sayler) of Lunenburg, VA. There are also a number of great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
Miss Smith was a veteran of the United States Navy in World War II. She served from 1943 through 1946 and for an additional 6 years in the Naval Reserve.
Her professional career began after the war with Lynchburg Federal Savings & Loan in Lynchburg Rising to Branch Manager and the head of the Mortgage Loan Dept. The Bank\"™s name was later changed to American Federal Savings Banks from which she retired.
Florence was a long-time member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg, VA. She was also a well-known classical soprano and gave a number of solo recitals, had parts in performances at the community theater and was a guest soloist for many events around the Lynchburg area.
A memorial service will be held at Sunnyside Retirement community Chapel, Harrisonburg, VA, on February 23, 2013 at 2:00 PM. Her remains will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Northern Virginia at a later date.
