Frances Ruth Hendrick Saunders, from Bedford, went into the arms of her Heavenly Father May 15, 2015. She was the wife of the late Joseph James Saunders, Jr.
Born January 29, 1918 in Roanoke, VA, she was a daughter of the late Thurston Woody Hendrick and Fannie Ruth Tosh Hendrick. Frances retired after 40 years with Leggett’s Department Store which later became Belk. Frances was a Past Worthy Matron member of the Eastern Star and also a member of Bedford Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her son: Joseph J. Saunders, III, brothers: Paul, Warren, and William Hendrick, sister: Christine Francis. Her greatest pride was her family, raising her two boys while working outside of the home. When grandchildren began arriving, she found yet another joy in them and became known as Granny Fanny. Work, church and family made up Frances’ life, which she enjoyed to the fullest. She shared her sense of humor which was a gift to all who knew her.
Surviving her is her son, Ronald Saunders (Barbara), daughter-in-law: Betty Q. Saunders, grandchildren: Kevin Saunders, Mary Beth McKenna (Mark), Tim Saunders, Stuart Saunders
(Shauna), Sara Bridges (Scott), great-grandchildren: Mae, Jenny, and Kate McKenna, Colin and Charlotte Bridges, Addylyn Saunders; sister: Barbara Jean Witt (Doodle), sister-in-law: Ann Hendrick, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to especially thank Mountain View Nursing Home in Aroda, VA for the loving care they gave Frances and the family these past years.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, May 19, 2015 in Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford at 3:00 pm with Pastor John Salley officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
