Frances Woodfin Averett Marshall, 97, of Lynchburg, died peacefully Friday, June 14, 2013 at Westminster-Canterbury. She was the wife of the late J. Merrick \"Mike\" Marshall for 63 years. They were childhood sweethearts.
Born May 28, 1916 in Cumberland County; she was a daughter of the late Willie Wise Averett, Jr. and the late Sara Ligon Averett. She graduated from Lynchburg College and taught at the New London Academy. She was a member of St. Paul\"™s Episcopal Church where she was very active in the choir, the alter guild, and the thrift shop.
Frances is also preceded in death by a son, Dr. William Averett Marshall; sisters, Imogen (Gene) A. Christopher, Katherine A. Valiant; and brothers, William Anderson Averett, George Kirkwood Averett and Willie Wise Averett, III.
Frances is survived by a son, Randolph Marshall, II, and his wife, Virginia B.; daughter, Martha Marshall Cassell, and her husband, John W. Cassell; sister, Ann A. McIntosh; granddaughters, Sara A. Domerchie, and husband, C.J., Frances A. Cassell, Elizabeth M. Marshall and Elizabeth M. Cassell; grandsons, Matthew Marshall, J. Merrick Marshall, II, and his wife, Margaret, William R. Marshall, William M. Cassell; and five great-grandchildren.
Frances was a member of the Lynchburg Junior League and the Lynchburg Garden Club.
A memorial service will be held on September 21, 2013 at 11:00 am at St. Paul\"™s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Todd M. Vie. Inurnment will take place in Spring Hill Cemetery.
