Fred Thurmond Kidd, 100, of Lynchburg, Va., died on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Westminster-Canterbury, Lynchburg.
Born at home on Dutch Creek in Nelson County, Va., he was a graduate of Nelson County High School and Phillips Business College. In 1937 he began his 56-year career with Imperial Colliery Company, where he served as treasurer until his retirement in 1992. Two years later he grudgingly stopped working and moved out of his office. He was a founding member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, where he also served on the Vestry. He was active in the Kiwanis Club, and he loved raising boxwoods as a hobby. He was an accomplished pool player and was active in the billiards team at Westminster-Canterbury.
The son of the late Eugene and Katie Kidd, he was preceded in death by his sisters Frances and Jean and his wife of 68 years, Alice B. Kidd of Lynchburg. He is survived by one son, Eugene Kidd and his wife, Mary, of Lynchburg; daughter, Irene Wenger of Norfolk; and daughter, Martha Sullivan of Alexandria. Also surviving him are six grandchildren: Andrea Kinnear and her husband, Adam, of Norfolk; Eleanor Jones and her husband, Colston, of Norfolk; Martha Kidd and her husband, Richard Barnes, of Arlington; Carolyn Duren and her husband, Chris, of Charlottesville; Thomas Sullivan of Alexandria; and Kathleen Sullivan of Arlington. In addition, he has six great-grandchildren: Jacob, Stephen, Elsa, and Samuel Kinnear and Phineas and Gideon Jones, all of Norfolk.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018 in the chapel at Westminster-Canterbury, 501 VES Road in Lynchburg. The Rev. Lloyd Lipscomb will officiate. The family will receive friends at a reception in Westminster-Canterbury’s activity room immediately after the service.
