Fred H. Lane 75, of Hardy, Virginia, died on December 3, 2020 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem, Virginia. Fred was born in Kingsport, Tennessee to the late William Carl Lane and Reba Lane. He was preceded in death by his daughter Vanessa Dawn Lane and sister Janet Phifer.
Fred Is survived by his wife, Mary, his sisters Pamela, Ginny, Melissa, Belinda, Teresa, Michelle and Amy. He is also survived by his very special and best friend, Royal Lilly. Fred volunteered to serve in the Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Longbeach. He worked as a locomotive engineer for the Norfolk and Western Railroad and was a railroad Occupational and Safety and Health specialist at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. Fred was an avid sportsman. He especially loved the ocean and sailing. His other hobbies included deep sea fishing and fly fishing. He enjoyed collecting antiques and refinishing and restoring wood furniture.
Fred served as Flotilla Commander for Flotilla 81 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for 2 years. During his tenure, his shipmates remarked how he would personify the spirit of “Semper Paratus” by engaging both personally and on a Flotilla Level. Fred willingly shared his time, knowledge and experience creating a diverse and inclusive environment. Fred’s leadership by example was contagious throughout his reign as Flotilla Commander. Attention to detail and thinking outside the box, surely supported the fulfillment to the highest degree of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s readiness and mission.
Fred will be remembered for his outgoing and friendly personality. He loved to make people laugh and always had a funny story to tell. He will be missed by family and friends.
A small service will be held on Friday, December 11 at 2:00 at the Tharp Funeral Home, 320 North Bridge St., Bedford, Virginia.
