Frederick William Hanning

Frederick William Hanning of the Elks National Home in Bedford, VA, formerly of Connestee Falls, Brevard, NC, Incline Village, NV, and Tampa, FL, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2011. He was born January 12, 1923 to the late Theodore W. and Mary Forbes Hanning in Washington, CT. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64½ years, Betsy Hotchkiss Hanning.

Fred graduated Salutatorian of Romford Preparatory School in Washington, CT. He served in the US Army during World War II, was wounded in New Guinea, and earned the Purple Heart. He graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1947, where he was a SAE brother.

Fred worked for Curtis 1000 for 22 years before changing directions and managing several resorts, including Waynesville Country Club and Roaring Gap Club in North Carolina, before retiring in 1980.

He loved to travel, visiting all of the continental states and over 15 countries. He spent 15 summers in Incline Village, NV and 21 blessed Christmases at Kanuga in Hendersonville, NC. He was proud of his Swedish heritage and enjoyed both visiting his family in Sweden and hosting his family from Sweden. He was also very proud of his hole-in-one at the golf course at Connestee Falls.

When a man lives his life with integrity, principles, and morals, he leaves a legacy that will last forever. Fred Hanning was a true gentleman, who loved his family, his country and his vast number of friends who were blessed to have him walk through their lives, even for only a brief moment in time. His love for others and strong principles led him to be an active Episcopalian, Jaycee, Scottish Rite Mason, Shriner, and Elk.

He is preceded in death by his sister Theodora Belfanti and his son-in-law, Tom Pettit. In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his his sister, Vee Roberts of New Milford, CT; his son, Chipper Hanning of the Elks National Home in Bedford, VA, and his daughter, Mary Hanning Pettit of Morgantown, WV; his 2 granddaughters Margaret Pettit Yanchak and husband George Yanchak of Morgantown, WV and Rebecca Pettit of Tampa, FL; his 3 great-grandchildren Joseph, Thomas, and Mary Jane Yanchak; and his many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A Funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 10 am at St. John\"™s Episcopal Church in Bedford, VA. Fred\"™s family would like to thank the staff at Elks National Home who have given Fred such good care over the last 5 years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Elks National Home.

A burial service will take place Summer 2011 in New Preston, CT. Fred Hanning\"™s legacy will continue on in our memories.
