On July 30, 2022, God in His infinite wisdom called our dearly beloved Ann Callands-McDaniel from labor to rest while she was at home surrounded by her loving and devoted family. She was 88 years blessed. Ann was born on August 12, 1933, in Nathalie, VA, to the late Charlie and Florence Pringle. To this union, Ann had five siblings, all of whom preceded her in death-the late Dorothy Logan of Saluda, SC; the late Edna Matthews of Hollis, NY; the late Mary Goode of Petersburg, VA; the late Marion Kelly of Philadelphia, PA; the late Gertrude Logan of Philadelphia, PA-and her late nephew Charles Pringle.

Ann was raised on the family farm in Nathalie and attended Mary Bethune High School in Halifax, VA. At an early age, she learned to play the piano at home and would use her talent to play for several churches throughout her many years of devotion and community service. These churches included Hickory Grove Baptist (where she was baptized at an early age) and Republican Grove Baptist in Nathalie and Millstone Baptist and First Buffalo Baptist in Halifax.

On June 9, 1951, Ann married her devoted and loving husband, Thurman J. Callands, until God called him home. They were happily married for 44 years. From this union, five children were born: Truee Dorsey (Jerome) of Clayton, DE; Thurman Callands (Dianne) of Lynchburg; Marion Kain of Lynchburg; Keith Callands (Siniva) of Killeen, TX; and Tori Callands (Fiancé Alicia) of Lynchburg. Ann has 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ann and Thurman moved their family to Lynchburg, VA, and joined New Vine Baptist Church, where Ann served as Deaconess and played for the Youth & Senior Choirs. Ann was a bus driver for the Campbell County School System for more than 42 years. Of all the roles and titles Ann attained throughout her life, her most cherished was that of Mom and Nana.

Ann was well known for her cooking and was always cultivating her gift of baking cakes, pies, and many other desserts that satisfied the taste buds of anyone blessed to share in her culinary delights. In her golden years, Ann enjoyed gardening and visiting friends and the sick and shut in.

In June of 2000, Ann married the late Clinton McDaniel of Lynchburg. She leaves to cherish her precious memories and carry her legacy, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and three sisters-in-law: Claudine Dixon of Nathalie, Arnell Miller of Gretna, VA, and Ella Mae Callands of Madison Heights, VA.

The family would like to offer its sincerest gratitude to the many kind acts, words, cards, and gestures extended to us during our mom’s illness and her passing. We would like to acknowledge and personally thank her health aides, Denise Bateman and Tracey Tyler, for the countless hours and care they provided to our mom. We also would like to thank Centra Hospice for its care and assistance up to mom’s final moments with us. Most importantly, we are forever grateful to our siblings, Marion and Tori, and our sister-in-law Dianne Callands. They spent countless hours planning and caring for our mother, and Dianne treated her as if she were her own. For all you have done in our mother’s time of need up until to her passing, we love you and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at New Vine Baptist Church 616 Old Rustburg Rd, Lynchburg, VA, 24501. Interment will follow the service at the church cemetery.

She will lie in repose at Tharp Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and Wednesday, August 3, 2022, from 9:00 am – to 6:00 pm., and at New Vine Baptist Church one hour prior to the service.

Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg is assisting the family.
