A celebration of life will be held on Friday March 18, 2022, 2:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg Chapel. Interment will follow the service at Second Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
Arthur “AJ” Jerry Johnson
Arthur J. Johnson gained his heavenly wings and joined our Heavenly Father on Sunday, March 13, 2022. Arthur was born in Nelson County on December 17, 1951, a son of the late Thomas D. Johnson and Catherine I. Johnson.
Arthur accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and joined the Second Minerals Baptist Church, Gladstone, VA.
Arthur is preceded in death by three brothers, Elder Warren Johnson, George Johnson Sr., and Robert Johnson; three sisters, Dorothy Johnson, Rose Brazil and Geraldine Barksdale.
Arthur attended and graduated from Nelson County High School in 1971, where he achieved many accomplishments, titles and medals for Indoor Track, Outdoor Track and Cross County running. Arthur was inducted into the 2022 Nelson County Hall of Fame and received his letter jacket on March 12, 2022. Arthur was proud of his accomplishments and loved to talk about the “Old Days”.
Arthur joined the U. S. Military at an early age and after leaving the Military he followed his passion in Brick Masonry for over 40 years and retired from the Archer Creek Foundry. He also served as a Butcher for many local grocery stores and serviced many neighbors, family & friends with his lawn care services.
Arthur was well known from Nelson County to Lynchburg and beyond. He was an avid San Francisco 49er and Boston Celtic fan. He loved a good Cigar, watching Westerns and talking on the telephone.
Arthur leaves to cherish his memory, loving wife, Doris Johnson; daughter, Antionette James, of Greensboro, NC; Step-son Roger Henderson Jr., of Madison Heights, VA; Grandson, Reese Henderson of Madison Heights, VA; one brother, Kenneth Johnson of Lynchburg, VA; three sisters, Karen Gills of Reston, VA, Edith Carter (Joseph) of Roseland, VA; Cheryl Morris of Lynchburg, VA; sister in law, Judy Smith of Greensboro, NC; devoted niece, Catherine Carter-Haynes; devoted cousin, Denise Johnson; devoted friends, Deacon Mike Turner, Mickey Carter, Tommy Brown and Raymond Carter, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg is assisting the family.
