Betty Crater Wise

June 23, 1928 - December 14, 2022

Betty Crater Wise, 94, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on December 14, 2022 in Lynchburg, Va. She was born in Forsyth County, NC. on June 23, 1928 to Howard Rondthaler and Lillie Ziglar Crater. Ms. Wise graduated from Clemmons High School and went to work at the Arcade Department Store in Winston-Salem. Later, she worked at Hunter/Jostens Publishing Company where she retired after 22 years of employment.

Ms. Wise was a lifelong member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. She was a member of the Hillcrest Golf Association and later the Tanglewood Ladies Golf Association.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, George Wise, Sr., her brothers, H.R., Roger, Albert and Wilburn Crater; sisters, Geneva Easter and Sarah Rash, and special niece Judy Renfro.

Surviving Ms. Wise are her children, Patricia Wise Spaugh of Ridgeway, VA and Bill Wise (Laura) of Lynchburg, VA.; three grandchildren, Joshua Spaugh(Shannon), Jeffrey Spaugh(Carolyn) and Jessica Wise; and two great grandchildren Liam and Connor Spaugh.

She didn’t want to be a bother to anyone. She didn’t want anyone to spend money on her. Dementia robbed her of her understanding of where she was and who was around her. However, she knew she was loved.

A special thanks to the staff at Runk & Pratt Pearls of Life in Lynchburg for lovingly caring for Betty for the past five years.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 20th, at 3:00 PM in God’s Acre at New Philadelphia Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg is assisting the family. To send condolences, please visit www.tharpfuneralhome.com.
