Carmen Evans
Beautiful swimmer, sailor and soul, Carmen Evans left her tired Earthly body behind to find new adventures in the early morning hours of March 5, 2023.
Born in Miami, Florida, Carmen spent the great majority of her early life in Queens, New York. She moved to Virginia for college where her interests ran the gamut from Chemistry to Veterinary Science to Dance.
She eventually settled in Norfolk and lived in her beloved “Mayflower Inn” for over 30 years, taking in the beauty of Knitting Mill Creek from the best front porch in town. Her passion for people and learning led her to many interesting career endeavors including The Norfolk School of Boatbuilding, Paxton Marine, Goodman-Segar-Hogan Real Estate, William E. Wood Real Estate, Norfolk Boat Works and Pioneer Title. Each job brought new friends and experiences she carried with her throughout her days.
Carmen is survived by her husband, Mark Edwards, and his children, Erin Terlesky (Mike), Seth Edwards (Lindsey), Andrew Edwards (Liz) and Sara Thompson (Raleigh), and grandchildren Wesley, Mallory, Elliott, Zoë and Banks. She is also survived by her mother, Carmen Evans, her sister, Mercie Winfree and her children Christopher Lawrence, Liz Ballard (Heath), Edward Winfree and her great niece, Tessa. She is also and forever missed by Miss Ellie, our eternally seven year old fur baby.
Carmen particularly loved her parent’s farm, Holding Ground, the Chesapeake Bay and Kitty Hawk. Informal services will be held in each of these places in the near future.
To honor her love of the Chesapeake Bay, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Chesapeake Bay Foundation
“For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.”
