I have many great memories of picnics and reunions with the Elliott clan, especially fun with my aunt Christene. In the late 1960s, there was an amusement park in Roanoke called Lakeside. This park had a monster roller coaster. I was 10 years old and clearly remember the paint peeling from the wood structure. This roller coaster looked like it would collapse at any moment. There were a bunch of cousins riding the roller coaster over and over, except me. I was being teased for being such a scaredy-cat! Aunt Christene observed my plight, hugged, and encouraged me to ride the roller coaster. After my first ride of course I did not want to get off. Eventually, Christene and my mom Shirley (Christene's sister) got me off this ride to join our family picnic. My condolences to aunt Christene's generations of family.
