Dr. Antal Endre Solyom, M.D., Ph.D., M.A
Antal Endre Solyom, M.D., Ph.D., M.A., 85, of Lynchburg, VA, died Wednesday, July 13, 2022.
He was born on July 29, 1936, in Budapest, Hungary, to the late Illona Molnar and Antal Solyom.
He is survived by his spouse, Gwen Ellen Cattle Solyom, their son, Dr. Alexander I. Solyom; daughter-in-law, Katalin Komlosi and grandchildren, Laura, Lorand and Isabelle (in Germany); and by his sister, Katalin Solyom (in Hungary).
Despite his Summa cum laude diploma, he was denied an academic career in medicine because of the communist regime and turned to research pharmacology. He came to the U.S. in 1966. While at the National Institutes of Health in 1970, he met his future spouse, a returned Peace Corps Volunteer, and a Georgetown University Graduate student. They were married a year later at St. Andrew’s in Seward, Nebraska, in a joint Catholic-Episcopal ceremony. By 1972 he trained un dynamic psychiatry at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and serves as assistant professor of child and adolescent psychiatry there. He established the first Infant Psychiatry Program.
The Solyoms came to Lynchburg in 1989. Dr. Solyom became the Medical Director of child and Adolescent Psychiatry of Centra Health, Inc. He was co-founder of the Piedmont Psychiatric Center in 1995. He retired in 2002. At age, 66, he earned his M.S. in Bioethics at the University of Virginia.
In the next ten years he continued to write on bioethics and served at the Community Clinic.
A private inurnment is planned at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Lynchburg, where his ashes will be placed in the columbarium. Separately, a memorial gathering is planned at Westminster Canterbury, at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2022. Any note of condolence or personal comments should be directed there.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fellowship Fund of the Westminster Canterbury Foundation and/or the Transplant Clinic of the University of Virginia.
