Gerard Gilbert Hutcherson, Sr.
Our heavenly Father knew that the roads were getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb. After many health issues and battles, He called his earthly servant home, and said “Peace be Thine.” Gerard entered into eternal life at his home; he was set free! Gerard never met a stranger, and so many people referred to him as a sweet, kind man. Gerard felt that God gave him the DUTY of helping all that he could, and leading sinners to Christ. He was truly a servant of God and gained his wings on Monday, October 18, 2021.
He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory four loving and devoted children, Gerard, Jr (Denijah) of Baltimore, Md, Carlos (Gloria) of Lynchburg, LaTasha (Jamar) of Macon, Ga, and Devante “Samuel” Wood of Atlanta, Ga. He also leaves one brother, Carl B Hutcherson, Jr (Glodelia), and an estranged wife and good friend, Mary. Also left to cherish his memory are ten loving grandchildren: Carlos, Jr., Marion, Caliph, Genesis, Gerard, III, Wisdom, Isaiah, Amir, Joel, and Jamar. He was preceded in death by his loving parents Carl B. Hutcherson, Sr., and Lillian Gilbert Hutcherson. He had several loving in-laws, Louis Matthews, George Matthews, Lita Patten, Nita Harrington, Brenda Christian (Mike), Gregory Matthews; the late Eugene Matthews (Regina), Gwendolyn Morris, and Crystal Matthews. He leaves a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Gerard was educated in the Lynchburg Public School system, where he graduated from Dunbar High School in the Class of 1968. He attended Cornell University and Hampton University. He graduated from The Gupton Jones Mortuary School in Atlanta, Georgia. He also graduated from Virginia Seminary & College. He was a faithful member of The Jackson Street United Methodist Church until he was called into the ministry and became ordained as Outreach Minister at Amazing Grace Church.
A community activist for many years, he led The College Neighborhood Watch Group in attaining the College Hill Neighborhood Center, located at the corner of 9th and Jackson Streets. He was an avid member of the Lynchburg Voters League. His passion was restoring the rights of those who had served their time in the penal system. He was a member of the NAACP. Gerard was also a delegate at the 1988 Presidential Democratic Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.
In Atlanta, GA, Gerard was employed at The U. S. Geological Survey and at Yellow Freight. In Lynchburg, he spent many years as a Mortician at the Hutcherson Funeral Home; he was also employed at Community Access. He held several volunteer positions throughout the city.
Gerard will now be reunited with his beloved parents, and many others that preceded him to glory. We will love and cherish his memories; but our God knows best.
