Jackson Alexander Cunningham

April 19, 2005 - September 27, 2021

Jackson Alexander Cunningham, 16, of Lynchburg went to be with the Lord, Monday, September 27, 2021.

Jack was born April 19, 2005, in Lynchburg, a son of Gregory S. Cunningham and Heather M. Cunningham. Jack attended Rustburg High School and was dually enrolled at CVCC. You could always find him on a soccer field whether at Central Virginia United Soccer or Rustburg High School. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. He was a quiet, gentle soul that loved his family, and playing Xbox with his friends. He loved spending time at his grandparents on the weekends with his brother and sister.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother Walker Cunningham, a sister Abby Cunningham, grandparents Pete & Barbara Cunningham, and grandmother Martha Mahanes, Uncle Nate Mahanes (Becca), and Aunt Jennifer Mahanes. He was predeceased by grandfather, Robert (Bob) Mahanes and uncle, Matthew Cunningham.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 2021, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.

A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 2021, at the Rustburg High School Football Stadium with Pastor Mike Miller officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorial contributions to Central Virginia United Soccer, the local chapter of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, or to a charity of your choice.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.

May my condolences bring you comfort and may my prayers ease the pain of this loss. Revelation 21;4 God, we know that this baby is in heaven with you but Jacksons patents are grieving the loss of him here on earth. It seems unfair and it’s devastating, but I pray that you would continue to wrap your arms around this family as they cry, mourn, and remember the life of their precious child. Please be with the parents as they mourn the loss of the hope they had for their child. Wipe their tears when it just seems too heavy for them. Help them to know that you are in control and that there will be a day when all the heartache and brokenness of the world will be gone forever.

I am not family nor did I personally know Jackson. But I am a mother who buried my son at the age of 28 just three years ago and I understand the grief and I feel your heart as it is breaking. I understand all the unanswered questions and asking God, “why my child.” God never gives us more than we can bear. Treasure all the memories and keep them in your heart. May God give you the comfort and strength that you will need not only today but everyday forward.

Heather, Greg, and the entire Cunningham family, I have been praying for you all week. I cannot believe Jack, or as my husband and I lovingly called "Jack Hammer" (he had an amazingly powerful kick) is no longer with us. He had a smile that lit up the world. I am blessed to have known him in 6 years he and Solomon played together. The world is a darker meaner place without his light shining in it. Every life he touched will never be the same without him. 31 will forever be I our hearts. Much Love, Elizabeth

Our thoughts and prayers have been with your family all this week. We are praying for comfort and strength. I was incredibly blessed to teach Jack in second grade. I will always remember the extra time I had with him in the classroom since he was the first to arrive in the mornings. We'd talk about games, food, and always soccer. He'd ask about my brothers since he knew they played and he'd share how his games were going. I remember it being so easy to call on JUST him all the time during class because his love for learning lit up the room. He'd be practically coming out of his seat to share! I pray that during this difficult time you can hold tight to the wonderful memories.

The Cunningham’s, I am so thankful for the friendship I’ve had with Jack. He always lifted the mood of the day and always gave you the sweetest smiles. Looking back at memories from our childhoods make me smile and reminds me of our close friendship. He was so involved and dedicated to soccer and all things he did. I’m so glad our family—and Matthew in particular—had a chance to have Jack be part of our lives. From that first day of kindergarten, Jack’s smile made our lives brighter. I have wonderful memories of driving the boys while they huddled in the back yelling along with the radio and of Halloween parties dressed as superheroes. Jack made the world better, and we were so lucky to know him.
