Joanne Edith Vagi
Joanne Edith Vagi, age 91, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully at her home on August 30, 2023.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, on June 29, 1932, Joanne was the daughter of Mary Gertrude Roush and Howard James Metzger. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Julius (Jay) Vagi, brother James Edward Metzger and stepfather Martin Wilbur Roush.
Joanne was a graduate of South High School in Columbus and attended The Ohio State University. She worked at Battelle Memorial Institute where she met her husband, then moved to Lynchburg and raised a family, and eventually served as a dental assistant for Dr. Lewis Angelo Arthur D.D.S. in Lynchburg. Joanne was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church and former member of the Windsor Hills Garden Club, Hill City Swim and Tennis Club, and several local bridge clubs.
She is survived by two sons, Joe Vagi and his wife, Kim, of Glen Allen, Virginia and Jon Vagi and his husband, Patrick Toal, of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. She also leaves behind her beloved granddaughter, Sierra Vagi of Glen Allen, sister-in-law Nancy Vagi of Lenoir City, Tennessee and many nieces and nephews.
Her final resting place will be with her husband at Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, Virginia.
The family would like to thank her caregivers Heather Younger and her Willow Wishes care team and Gentle Shepherd Hospice.
The family will be available during an open visitation at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, on Monday, September 4, 2023, from 10-11:00am, and a service from 11am -12pm.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
