John Herbert Fuqua

July 20, 2023

John Herbert Fuqua, 91, of Lynchburg, peacefully took his rest on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at his residence. John was born March 12, 1932, to the late Oscar and Ardella Fuqua.

In addition to his parents Genie boy was preceded in death by three brothers; Lloyd Fuqua, James Fuqua, and William Fuqua, three sisters; Ethel Thompson, Virginia Logwood, and Minnie Monroe and one brother-in-law, Anthony Tucker.

John was educated in Lynchburg City Schools. He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force. John was a faithful and dedicated member of the Old Dominion Lodge, #181 for over seventy years and served in the Antler Guard department. He enjoyed playing golf, cooking, spending time with family, and was always ready to cut a step on the dance floor. Fuqua was the absolute best “recliner coach” of his favorite football team, The Washington Redskins.

Left to cherish his memories are the apple of his eye, his loving and devoted wife, Phyllis Dianna Mays Fuqua. Although he has no biological children, his heart adopted many, Marisha Scott (Corey), Leonard Washington (Cynthia), Stanley Herndon, Fredrick Giles (Chanda), Sherry Donigan, and Lisa Jones to name a few. In laws that blood couldn’t make closer, Granville “That boy” Panny Mays, Dr. M.D., “That thief” Mays (Florence), Kenneth Mays, Mary Woody, Cynthia Ross (Elmon), Sharon Jones, and JoAnn Burford. Cherished and Supportive friend, Linda Abram. His fur baby and sidekick, Simon Fuqua. The Wise Street family, Josh, Sidney, Joan, Dan, and the Gentry family. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 28, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, VA. Interment will be at the George Washington McDaniel Memorial Cemetery.

To Phyllis Fuqua & May's Family. It's a comfort to know there are heroes among us, regular people, just like my Bro. John. Who was willing to do what he can to make the world a better place. Heroes give instead of taking. They act instead of talking. They step forward and do the hard and unseen jobs, to give the best of themselves. Measuring their own success, not by wealth or comfort, but by the lives they touch along the way. Bro. John will be missed. Sharing Romans15:5, from Linda Abrams 😍 & Abrams-Williams Families.
