John Walter Kania Sr.
John Walter Kania Sr., 61, died Friday, February 3, 2023.
John is survived by his wife Debra Kania, his son John W. Kania Jr., and his mother Nira G. Kania, brothers and sisters: Teresa and husband John Bays, Theodore Kania and wife Claudia, Anthony Kania and wife Deana, Michael Kania and wife Misty, Valerie and husband Jack Holt, and Sister Kimberly Honey. Lastly, Debra’s two sons and their wives, two grandchildren, many nephews and nieces, and longtime friends.
John graduated from Oak Hill High School in West Virginia. He joined the U.S. Army shortly after. He proudly served his country as an Air Traffic Controller. After leaving the Army he worked in construction, with the Kroger company, and finally with Home Depot.
He took pleasure working side by side with many fantastic people. “Go ask John, he’s the man in the Tan Cap” was how his co-workers referred to him. Many local customers would go looking for the associate with the familiar cap if they knew he would be working. John would often show off pictures of his “babies”; three dogs, two cats, one bird, and a giant tortoise.
John and Debra shared 15 wonderful and adventurous years together. He shared his love of the outdoors with Debra, in addition to woodworking, fishing, and gardening.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date.
If you would like to help, and in lieu of flowers, please reach out directly to Debra. She is working to ensure fond memories and mementos reach John’s friends and family.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg is assisting the family.
