Joseph Lee McDaniel

Joseph Lee McDaniel 69, of Amherst, VA. peacefully slipped into eternal rest on Sunday, June 11,2023 at his home with his caring wife and children by his side.

Born November 16,1953, he was the seventh child of nine and the youngest son of the late Silas Gordon and Mary Keys McDaniel. In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by three sisters: Alma Gentry, Beatrice Booth, and Mary Payne. Father-in-law; Calvin Martin, two sisters-in-laws; Mabel Mosley, and Barbara Martin and four brother in laws; Sandford Lewis, Kenny Tucker, Robert Smith, and Harry Booth Sr.

Joe was dedicated member of Morning Star Baptist Church Amherst where he served until his health declined. He served as a trustee, usher, and sang on various choirs. Joe worked for decades in the carpentry business and as a passionate auto mechanic.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving and devoted wife of 33 years, Carolyn Martin McDaniel, six daughters: Frances Johnson (Roger), Amanda Morris, Kwannesha McDaniel, Barbara VanAusdal (Ravon), Johanna McDaniel, and Marlene Clark (Timothy), one son, Arthur McDaniel.

Seven grandchildren; Rajeen, Nadia, Rashad, Ava Mia, Eli and Rio and two great-grandchildren. Four sisters; Louise Smith, Susie Nappier (George), Florence Mays (Rev. M.D. Mays) and Felda Alexander (Roger), one brother; Silas E. McDaniel (Joan), Mother-in-law; Margaret Stanley (Eric), two sisters in law; Velma Tucker and Sylvia Lewis, six brothers in law; Willie E. Payne Sr, Clayton Martin, Phillip Martin (Carolyn), George Martin (Marenda), Daniel Martin and Ray Martin (Shelia). Devoted friends; Josh, Tim, and LC. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Joseph’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg, VA with Reverend M.D. Mays officiating. His remains will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg is assisting the family.

Your family have our deepest condolences. My family and I are praying for you all. It was a blessing to hear Mr. McDaniel sang on the choir whenever I was invited to preach at Morning Star. I was always greeted with a strong handshake and a smile. I know he will be missed. Blessings to you all.
