Lt. Colonel Alexander “Sandy” James Stuart III
Lt. Colonel Alexander “Sandy” James Stuart, III, of Lynchburg passed away Saturday, April 8, 2023. He was the devoted husband of Linda Wright Stuart.
Sandy was born in Ancon, Panama, part of the U.S. canal zone, on February 17, 1938, a son of the late Colonel Alexander James Stuart, Jr. and Miriam Vannaman Stuart. He graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point in 1961 and proceeded to serve 20 years in the Army. During his Army career he graduated from Command and General Staff College with Honors, spent 3 years in Germany, 2 tours in Vietnam, 4 years at the Pentagon, and numerous tours around the United States. After retiring and moving to Lynchburg, he graduated from Lynchburg College with a Masters in Business Administration and became a CPA. He then founded Huff, Stuart, and Carlton, a financial planning firm, with a friend. The firm is now known as HSC Wealth Advisors in Forest, VA.
Sandy loved his Lord and was active singing and teaching in Post chapels, where he was stationed. After retiring from the Army, he was active as an Elder at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, VA, where he sang in the choir for 35 years. He was involved with the missionary committee and the LIFE club where he interacted with international students from Randolph-Macon College. Sandy and his wife, Linda enjoyed ballroom dancing, traveling, and spending time with their family.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Linda, he is survived by a daughter Sharon Heida and her husband Jeffrey, of Omaha, NE, a son Alexander J. Stuart, IV, and his wife Tammy, of Lynchburg, a brother Douglas V. Stuart and his wife Jackie, of San Diego, CA, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, along with three grandsons and two
great-grandchildren by family marriage. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Morrow.
A service will be held at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, April 18th, at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church with Pastor David Weber officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.
