Peyton Wyatt Callahan
Peyton Wyatt Callahan was born to the late Peyton Callahan and -Lugenia Ferguson on October 19, 1930, in Appomattox, Virginia. He was the last born of 10. He departed this life on Saturday, August 6, 2022. He was 91 and proud of his age. He was proud not to be on meds and not to wear glasses.
Peyton joined the First Baptist Church as a child. His best friend was Leon “Boo” Loving. He always talked about his childhood in Appomattox with ‘Boo”. His other childhood friend was his cousin, McKinley “Bobby” Lewis.
Peyton moved to New York after graduation. He lived with his sister Daisy in Brooklyn. He went to work for the Railroad in the mail department. He worked there until he retired. On that job he worked with Tony Bennett before he became a famous singer.
Peyton married Doris C. Coleman (deceased May 11, 1999). they were married for 46 years; they resided in New Rochelle on a street that he was very proud of. His neighbors were doctors, lawyers, a judge and businessmen. He was proud because they socialized with him. He had a beautiful house and a beautiful wife, that was important to him. Those neighbors called and checked on him since he moved to Virginia.
Peyton moved to Virginia because he became ill and could not live alone. He moved to Forest with his cousins Christine “Tina” Fitch and husband, Lewis. He lived with them a year and moved into his own apartment in Lynchburg until his death.
He leaves a daughter, Phyllis, and five grandchildren, Desiree, June, Urander, Unice and Eakia. He has a host of nieces and nephews, Iris, Brenda, Jerome, Robbin, and Calvin, Jr. He will be missed by his friends and family.
A celebration of Peyton’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24502. The Reverend Chester Jordan will officiate the service.
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
