Robert P. Jones

Robert P. Jones departed this life peacefully, at Lynchburg General Hospital on February 1, 2022. He was born on February 2, 1942, to the late James Thomas and Marion Royal Jones, in Campbell County, (Clarkstown) Va. He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy Ann Stratton Jones and son Robert Anthony Jones.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory, his children; Linda (Steve) Harsley, Gregory (Clara) Stratton, James (Ruby) Jones, Tammie (Leon) Watkins, and Lester Jones, and his 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and two great- great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

He served in the United States Navy on the Aircraft carrier USS ESSEX as an air traffic controller during the Vietnam Era. He was the first African American bus driver for the Lynchburg Transit company, and he was also a bus driver for the Campbell County School System. He was employed with Griffin Pipe for 23 years. He was a member of St. James CME Church. Robert was also very fond of a different variety of music, but Motown was his favorite.

A Celebration of life will be held on February 5, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg Va. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Clarkstown Cemetery.

I have just learned of Mr. Jones passing and want to offer my thoughts and sympathies to his family. I will always smile when I think of him and the many conversations we had and the laughter we often shared. It was my pleasure to have met him and I will always think of him fondly.

Tammie, I didn't know Robert was your father. What a nice gentleman he was. I had seen him many times when visiting my parents at Liberty Ridge. You and your family are in my prayers.

Very sorry for your loss of a proud courageous veteran who took on the oath to protect his proud country that Mr. Jones loved so much. He was a faithful husband and together with his wife Mrs. John raised their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Thank you Mr Robert Jones for your service to this great country and for becoming a brave Navy Soldier during the Vietnam War. God bless you for being the first Black Soldier at your rank as an Air Craft Contronan on the USSR during a time this country upmost ly need by this great country.
