Robert William Newton

Robert William “Bob” Newton, 81, of Bedford passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Montgomery County. He was born in New York on March 24, 1941. A son of the late Paul Newton and Alice Barnwell Newton.

Bob had a huge passion for music. He started his music career in 1958 in New York and pursued his passion until 1964 when he joined the United States Army. He spent 8 years in the military before returning to his home in New York. After returning home he went to work again in the music industry for CBS Radio as a DJ from 1972-1985. In 1985 he worked with a radio station providing Christian and Oldies music to so many listeners. After the radio station shutting down in 1995, he went to work for Yellow Cab as a Taxi Driver until they closed in 2018. Bob loved his clients and always enjoyed what he did. He always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and always put them first.

Bob is survived by his wife of 28 years, Christy Crouch Newton; daughters, Nicolle Williams and her husband, Reginald Williams Sr. and Olivia Newton; Seven grandchildren, Reginald Williams, Jr., Desiree Williams-Grizzle, Marcus Williams, Ryan Williams, Monique William and the twins, Tamia and Tevin Williams; Nine great-grandchildren, Brianna Summers, Malinda Williams, Quincy Sheppard, Reginald Williams, III, Ayden Sheppard, Makayla Williams, Denado Grizzle, Jr., Nicholas Harrington and Ezekiael Grizzle.

A memorial service and time of fellowship will be conducted at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at Tharp Funeral Chapel in Bedford. I had Bob laughing in Vinton Kroger in which had to be right before his death,worked with him at Yellow Cab but nothing was greater than seeing him in Kroger and getting him to laugh, I will cherish those moments for the rest of my life,thank God for this man, I do remember , the last time we talked I just had to keep talking to himnever get in a hurry talking to your friends because it might be the last time you ever see them

I was fortunate to have worked with "Big Bob" Newton at WLVA Radio, in Lynchburg, VA in the 80's. Bob's passing is a big loss to everyone that knew him.
