Stannard Hutter Preston

May 26, 1953 - August 7, 2022

Stannard Hutter Preston, 69, passed away on August 7, 2022. She was born May 26, 1953, in Lynchburg, Virginia, which she adored and where she lived most of her life. She graduated from Seven Hills School and attended Salem College, the University of Virginia, and Randolph-Macon Women’s College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in English. Stannard also earned a Master of Arts degree in teaching from Duke University.

Stannard began her career in Camp Lejeune, NC. She later moved to Washington DC, where she worked for 10 years as an Executive Administrator at Touche Ross & Co. and Arthur Andersen. She then moved back to Lynchburg to be closer to family and friends; and continued her English teaching and tutoring career until September 2020.

Most important to Stannard was to give her time and energy in support of others. She worked tirelessly as a volunteer child advocate with CASA and was an office volunteer and member of the Session and choir at First Presbyterian Church. Stannard was also a board member and docent at History Sandusky, her ancestral home.

Stannard loved Lynchburg. She was an avid reader, a talented cook, a musician, and an English language enthusiast. Her family and friends will remember her as kind and supportive, dedicated to her family and friends, sentimental, always eager to help and to listen, and to be there in times of need.

She is survived by her brother Alan S. Preston (Kathleen), nephew James R. Preston (Allison), her uncle George C. Hutter, and her cousins Allie Fitchett, Shirley Hayes, David Kemp, Katherine Cucco, Tyler Kemp-Benedict, Beverly Hunter, Mark Hutter and James Hutter.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg on Saturday August 13 at 11:30 am followed by a reception and a private interment at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to First Presbyterian Church or the Historic Sandusky Foundation.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.

I knew Stannard from her work at CASA and she was always so dedicated to the children and families she worked with. She was a sound voice of reason and a lovely human to know. Lynchburg is a little dimmer without her here. I'm so grateful I got to know her and work with her. Rest well, friend.
