Thomas Truman Butterfield

March 4, 1949 - October 23, 2021

Thomas Truman Butterfield, 72 of Lynchburg VA passed away on October 23, 2021.

Born March 4, 1949, in Middlebury, VT, Tom was the son of the late Lloyd G. Butterfield and Gloria (Mayette) Butterfield. As a son of a career Naval Officer, he lived in several parts of the US and in Japan. He settled in VA over 35 years ago. Tom graduated from Winchester High School in Massachusetts in 1967 and Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ in 1971 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked in the electronics field for many years. Tom was known for his generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand. He was known as someone who could fix just about anything and was indispensable for home and church projects. Tom’s many interests included horses, music, electronics, and his family’s genealogy which he traced throughout New England. Tom was deeply dedicated to his Christian faith.

He was recently predeceased by his wife Mary Judith (McNulty) in September 2021, and brother John L. Butterfield of Herndon, VA in 2018.

Tom is survived by his brother Stephen C. Butterfield of Middlebury, VT and sister Julia Butterfield (Jack) Cavacco of Deerfield, MA. He leaves his sister-in-law Nancy (Stewart) Butterfield and two uncles and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his closest friend, Randy Byars. We’d like to acknowledge the late Marian Nowlin for her faithful friendship.

Services will be private.

So sorry to hear about Tom. I worked with Tom at Ericsson in Lynchburg and he was a great man. Great sense of humor and fun to be around. I would see him around Lynchburg after Ericsson closed, and I loved to give him a ride, because he was always happy to see me and always had a great story or two to tell. God bless you Tom, you were a great friend and you will be missed very much (until we meet again).

Dear Julie & family, Sorry for the loss of your brother, Tom. The Butterfield family has such strong ties to Middlebury and Lake Dunmore despite the decades that have passed. It’s great that he is with his wife and the Butterfield’s that have passed on. His Christian Faith , no doubt, helped him make that transition easier. God’s Blessings, Audrey & Jim Peck Plaistow, NH
