Yvonne Baker Malcolm

February 20, 1922 - February 27, 2023

Yvonne Baker Malcolm was born February 20, 1922, and died February 27, 2023, at the age of 101. She was the daughter of Grace Stanfield Baker and Fred Elroy Baker of West Lafayette, Ind.

She graduated from Purdue University in sociology and originally worked in social work in Chicago for one year before going to Miami of Ohio and Case Western Reserve for graduated studies to become a first-grade teacher and then a reading specialist. She taught for twenty-seven years in Greenville, Ohio, before retiring first to Venice, Flo., and then from 2006 until her death in Lynchburg, Va.

Yvonne was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-four years Donald E Malcolm who died in 2011 at age 89. She is survived by her son Dr. Bradley Scott Malcolm and his wife Susan of Lynchburg; her grandchildren Whitney Malcolm Macechko and husband Matthew of Cave Springs, Ark., Paige Malcolm Marks and husband Kean of Lynchburg, and Dr. Colin Scott Malcolm and wife Maggie of Lynchburg. She also has seven great-grandchildren: Davlin Macechko, Emerson Macechko, Reed Marks, Owen Marks, Andrew Malcolm, Carl Malcolm, and Stella Malcolm whom she adored.

She was very active in golf and a former club champion, a champion bridge player, and coached girls’ high school tennis. She enjoyed watching Purdue sports and volunteering in reading and mentoring for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program in Florida. She was philanthropic and supported Purdue University and a number of organizations that helped the underprivileged including Jubilee Family Development, Miriam’s House, Lynchburg Grows, the YMCA, and The Salvation Army. She was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church. She will be remembered for many things but especially for her resiliency and her outgoing personality where she never met a stranger.

She will be interred at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette, Ind.  A private family service will be held at a later date.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Summit Assisted Living for their loving care over the past two years and The Summit Health and Rehab for the last two weeks of her life.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
