Garland Sparks

Garland O'Connor Sparks, 91, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, August 5, 2010. He was the husband of the late Lorene Sale Sparks.

Garland was born Sunday, May 18, 1919 in Campbell County, VA, a son of the late Glen Ezra Sparks and Ressie Kinder Sparks. Garland proudly served our country as a pilot in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Lieutenant Sparks was awarded the air medal \"For Meritorious Achievement In Arial Flight\" as an aircraft commander in combat. He was the retired owner of C. B. Sale Florist. Garland was a member of the Fort Hill Lion's Club, taught Sunday school, was youth leader, and served in many other capacities in church. Garland also volunteered at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

He is survived by his children; John Sparks and wife, Faye, of Lynchburg, and Sandra S. Turner of Rustburg, four grandchildren; Rob Turner and wife, Michelle, of Rustburg, Jeffrey Turner and wife, Chera, of Lynchburg, Andrew Turner and wife, Krista, of Rustburg, Jonathan Sparks of Lynchburg; five great grandchildren, and a brother, Marvin R. Sparks and wife, Alma, of Raleigh, NC.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Sparks and

G. E. Sparks and a sister, Rachael Irby.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 on Monday, August 9, 2010 at Tharp Funeral Home . A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 9, 2010 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory with the Rev. Janet Hawkins and the Rev. Philip M. Waltz officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 16.
