Gary W. Davis passed away at his home in Forest, Va. on Monday, November 23, 2015. He was born on May 16, 1952, in Lynchburg, Va. to the late Weldon and Louise Davis. Gary married the love of his life, Mary Ruth Vandegrift, on August 9, 1975, in Lynchburg, Va.
Gary was an active longtime member of Timberlake United Methodist Church.
He devoted over thirty years of his life working for Bedford County Public Schools. He started his career as a school psychologist, and retired as the Director of Personnel. During his tenure, he also served as the interim principal for Jefferson Forest High School. Throughout his professional career, Gary acted as president of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) of Central Va., and earned his Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) Certification. Gary was a graduate of E.C. Glass High School, and went on to earn his B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech, his M.S. in Psychology from Radford University, and his M.B.A. from Lynchburg College. After retiring from Bedford County Schools in 2009, he devoted his time to his family, his church, and to his love of gardening and volunteering. Some of his good works included volunteering at Park View Community Mission and Food Bank, Salvation Army Bell Ringer, serving as the Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 180 of the Boy Scouts of America, and he volunteered at Centra’s Health Living Center at the Jamerson YMCA. Gary was also a devoted Hokie and professional tailgater.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth; his sons, Philip and Wesley, and their wives,
Kimberley and Angela; a granddaughter, Samantha; an expected second grandchild; and one sister, Brenda Frank and her husband, Don of Brentwood, Tenn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2015, at Timberlake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lynn Alley-Grant and the Rev. Larry Davies officiating. The family will receive friends at the reception following the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Timberlake United Methodist Church, 21649 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502.
