Gary Mckendree Cheatham

Gary McKendree Cheatham, 82, of Lynchburg, Va., passed away peacefully at Lynchburg General Hospital Wednesday, May 24, 2017. He was a son of the late Thomas “Alec” Alexander Cheatham and Irene Jones Cheatham. Gary proudly served in the United States National Guard. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church. He retired from the Richmond Times Dispatch where he was a state circulation manager. He was dedicated to his family and he loved them very much. Gary had an endless taste for adventure and was always ready to help anybody who was in need.
Surviving are his wife, Katy Cheatham of Lynchburg; daughter, Michelle Ellinwood (Robert S) of Bedford County; step-children, Michael W. Spencer of Amawalk, N.Y., Virginia Bowling of Madison Heights, Michael Grant of Madison Heights, Terry Grant of Lynchburg, Carolyn Tyree of Evington, and Phillip Grant of Rustburg; eight step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; cousins, Dan Cheatham of Brookneal, June Cheatham (Hunter) of Richmond, Gilbert Cheatham of Kentucky, Robert Garbee, and Tommy Garbee; nieces and nephews, Ricky Cheatham of Gladys, Sandy Maranto of Texas, Betsy Cheatham of Lynchburg, Mickey Cheatham of Gladys, Susan Steadman of Gladys, Sarah Isaac of Gladys, Mary Beth Johnson of Chester, Tom Harvey of Boston, Ma. and John Harvey, Jr. of New River Valley; and his special canine companion, Tia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 30 years, Joyce Fry Cheatham; siblings, Joyce Cheatham Harvey, Melvin J. Cheatham, and Gerald A. Cheatham.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg on Saturday, May 27, 2017. A celebration of Gary’s life will be held at 12 p.m. noon at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 28, 2017 with Rev. Kevin M. Holt officiating.
