Gary Michael Miller

Gary Michael Miller, 66, of Lynchburg, VA, died Sunday, March 22, 2020.  He was the husband of Debra Manning Miller for 43 years.

Born Wednesday, April 22, 1953 in Lynchburg, Gary was a son of the late Charles Herman Miller and Barbara Ann St. John Miller.

In addition to his wife and mother, Gary is survived by four sisters; Zann Robinson (Gerald), Merissa Phillips (Wayne), Lynn Adkins, and Leslie Babis (Mike), one brother-in-law; Michael Manning, three daughters; Gail Childress (Barry), Christina Miller (T. Tucker), and Cindy Castaldo (Nick), a very special nephew; Bryan Manning (Sunny), six grandchildren; Ashley Sandford (Topher), Kyle Childress, Allyson Miller-Tucker, Michael Castaldo, Nicky Castaldo, and Joey Castaldo, one great-granddaughter; Taylor Belle Sandford, two special great nephews; Chase Manning, and Jaxon Manning; and a host of other relatives and friends

In addition to his father, Gary was preceded in death by one sister; Karen Miller, his father-in-law; Robert Manning, his mother-in-law; June Manning and three brothers-in-law; Michael Adkins, John Manning and Brian “Cubby” Manning.

Gary was educated in Lynchburg City Schools, participated in Boy Scouts of America throughout his youth, and was a beloved member of the Fort Hill United Methodist Church.  He lived in Lynchburg for his entire life, where he met Debra, the love of his life for more than 43 years.  Early in his career he was employed as a master wood craftsman for Winebarger Church Furniture Inc., where he built church pews, and years later became the maintenance supervisor at University of Lynchburg (formerly Lynchburg College) where he worked for 28 years.

His greatest joys were woodworking, building most anything he set his mind to, spending time at the beach, especially with his wife Debra and family. Gary was a sports fan and proudly supported EC Glass High School and University of Lynchburg his entire life. As an avid UVA fan, he enjoyed watching games on TV and occasionally in person.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A celebration of Gary’s life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Dr. J. Monty Fox officiating.  Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
