Gene W. Tomlin

Gene Wallace Tomlin of Lynchburg, died Friday December 4, 2015 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Born July 24, 1937, in Glasgow, VA, he was the son of Walter and Bessie Corbin Tomlin. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Childress Tomlin; a daughter, Leslie Tara Tomlin of Greenville, SC; twin granddaughters, Ashley Middleton and husband Andrew and great-granddaughter Ellie of Missouri and Brittany Tomlin of Greenville, SC; stepsons, Jimmie Childress, Jr. and his wife Kim, Dennis Childress and his wife Linda, and Douglas Childress and his wife Sebrina, all of Lynchburg; seven step-grandchildren and eleven step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Anna Evans Tomlin and one step-grandson, Adam Childress.

Gene graduated from E.C. Glass High School in the class of 1956 and from Lynchburg College in the class of 1960. He was a retired YMCA Professional Director having started as the Physical Director in Lynchburg, and then going on to serve YMCAs in Brevard County, FL, Daytona Beach, FL, Lake Charles, LA, Memphis, TN, Birmingham, AL, Louisville, KY, Sonoma County, CA and retiring from the Greenville, SC YMCA in 1995.

He was an active member of Euclid Christian Church. He had served many positions in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) over the years including Board Chair, CMF President, Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and Elder. He was an active Rotarian for many years, becoming a Paul Harris Fellow in 1994.

He became an avid amateur genealogist in 1985, while doing a fund raising campaign in Salt Lake City, Utah, and ended up becoming the family historian for the Tomlinson/Tomlin family of Amherst County. At the time of his death there were over 10,000 names in his family history database. He authored several books on the Tomlin family; the history of the First Christian Church of Greenville, SC; the history of the Greenville, SC and Lynchburg, VA YMCAs.

Inurnment will take place in the Columbarium of the First Christian Church of Greenville, SC.
