George Arthur Whorley, 85, of Big Island, died Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at his residence. He was born March 9, 1926 in Bedford County, a son of the late Pernie Bell Markham Whorley and George Edward Whorley.
Arthur was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church where he was a Deacon, choir member and former Sunday school teacher for over 60 years. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII where he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He worked at and was a co-owner of Goode\"™s Shoe Shop for over 53 years.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 63 years, Audrey Tomlin Whorley; a son, Larry Lynwood Whorley and his wife, Faye of Big Island; four grandchildren, Erica Barnett and her husband, Matthew of Lynchburg, Kellea Hogan and her husband, Matthew of Bedford, Jonathan Whorley and his wife, Erica of Big Island and Lauren Britton and her husband, Michael of Bedford; and ten grandchildren, Hannah Barnett, Benjamin Barnett, Wyatt Hogan, Ava Hogan, Audrey Hogan, Annabelle Whorley, Josephine Whorley, Anna Britton, Gabriel Britton and Michael Britton; two sisters, Mary Whorley of Big Island, and Daisy Rice and husband Walker of Big Island; and special friend and care giver, \"T.C.\" Johnson.

A celebration of Arthur\"™s life will be conducted at 2 PM, Saturday, January 7, 2011 at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Carey Snellings and Rev. James Newman officiating. Burial will follow in Hunting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors given by The National Guard. A reception will also follow in the church fellowship hall. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Friday, January 6, 2011 at Hunting Creek Baptist Church and at all other times at their home.
