George Berenz, beloved husband and father, passed away February 5th, 2022 at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Irene, his son Michael, extended family, and friends, and is now reunited with his brother Robert, and all those who preceded him.
George was born on October 3rd, 1941 to his father Michael “Mickey” Berenz, and mother Elsie in Bronx, NY. His brother Bob was like a second father to him, and best friend. The two worked on “hot rods” together and kept themselves mostly out of trouble, making classic cars a lifelong hobby.
The brothers also enjoyed hunting in upstate NY, and later Snowmobiling which turned into a whole-family hobby and led to George’s founding of a club which grew to 200 members that’s still active for 26 years.
George and Irene met at work and married in 1965. A traditional man of the house, he gave of himself to provide guidance, safety, wisdom and support for his wife and their son. His advice was frequently sought by his nieces and nephew as well, and everyone knew who to ask what’s the right thing to do.
After decades working in finance, George led a company which was eventually bought by General Electric (GE) Capital, and he is still admired by those he worked with for the “deals” he made.
Retirement in 2006 drew him and his wife to the beauty of Forest, VA, with Michael nearby for all their technical support needs. In truth, we all wanted to live near enough to see each other often, and valued that more with each passing year.
There will be a visitation at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg VA on Wednesday, February 9, 2021, from 2 – 3pm, followed by a service at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local police, fire and veterans.
