George Carter Kitts

d. January 12, 2019

Carter left this world on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the age of 86, having lived a fulfilling life. He had been recovering from recent surgery at Centra Lynchburg General, when he died of respiratory failure.

Carter grew up in Bluefield, Va, across the street from his future wife, then graduated from Virginia Tech in 1955, with a degree in Business Administration. He and Gloria most recently resided at beautiful Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia.

Settling in St. Albans, West Virginia, Carter had a long career as a sales engineer with Gulf Oil and Chevron, where he was known as an expert on lubricant products. Carter appeared in several Gulf Oil print media publications, as the ‘Pro from Gulf’.

Carter’s passions included Virginia Tech, where he was a Golden Hokie for over 35 years and the Charleston Charlies baseball team; he also doted on his beloved miniature schnauzers, and had a taste for blue cheese and olives. He was a good father, a devoted husband, and a southern gentleman.

He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Gloria Andes Kitts; his daughter Claire Shea (SIL George Murdock), and his dog Pepper.

Miss Me, But Let Me Go (by Edgar Albert Guest)

When I come to the end of the road

And the sun has set for me,

I want no rites in a gloom-filled room,

Why cry for a soul set free!

Miss me a little – but not for long

And not with your head bowed low.

Remember the love we once shared,

Miss me, but let me go.

For this journey that we all must take

And each must go alone;

It’s all part of the Master’s plan

A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick at heart

Go to the friends we know,

And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.

Miss me, but let me go.
