Our hearts are deeply saddened by the passing of our brother, father, grandfather, and loved one, George Flynn Johnson on September 10, 2020, with family by his side. He was the fifth of six children born to George R. Johnson and Frances Williams Johnson. The family was raised in Mcdowell/ Mercer County West Virginia and moved to Roanoke, Virginia in the 1970’s.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Hideko Sunagawa Johnson, his daughter, Gail Williams (Arthur), his son George H. Johnson, grandsons Adonis Williams (Mari), Alexus Williams, and granddaughter, Amaya Williams.
He will also be lovingly remembered by his siblings Betty Bulls (James), Jean Johnson Butler, Paula Johnson Peters (Howard-deceased), Bernice Johnson Wade, and Lindsey Johnson (Joylette).
In 1970, George made the decision to honorably enlist in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. He enjoyed an illustrious career, reaching the rank of Master Sergeant and earning numerous service medals and decorations to include the Air Force Achievement and Commendation medals. He retired in 1991 and was proud to call himself an Air Force Veteran. After retiring from the service, he enrolled at Radford University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s degree in Social Work. He pursued a career in counseling until his retirement from that field. Both careers supported his passion and heart for helping others. Those who knew him well and even those who had the opportunity to be in his presence, are forever left with the impression of a wittingly funny, smart, and most importantly, a caring human being and soul.
His family loved and cherished him dearly and request your well wishes and prayers during this time.
