George Francis Raymond, Sr.

George F. Raymond, Sr., 88, of Bentley Commons in Lynchburg, VA, formerly of Barefoot Bay, FL and South Grafton, MA, passed away peacefully at home June 16, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.

Born April 2, 1924 in Pawtucket, RI, he was the son of the late Victor U. and Leona (LaFave) Raymond.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Ruth Raymond. George is survived by his devoted wife of Madelyne (Record) Raymond. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 21, 2012.

In addition to his wife, he leaves to mourn his passing two sons, George F. Raymond Jr. (Susan Lufkin) of Forest, VA, Richard P. Raymond (partner Jenny Healy) of Fort Wayne, IN, and two beloved grandchildren Andrew G. Raymond (Michelle Brown) of Roanoke, VA and Valerie A. Raymond of Forest. He also leaves a great-grandson Eli F. Raymond of Roanoke, a brother, Roger U. Raymond (Loretta Amour) of Zephyr Hills, FL, a sister, Rita A. Lemoine (Girard) of Princeton, MA, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

George enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was a veteran of World War II, having served as a landing craft coxswain in the South Pacific Theater and participated in six battle campaigns and numerous beach landings while aboard the U.S.S. Salerno, the U.S.S. LaSalle, and the U.S.S. Warren.

George lived most of his life in South Grafton and upon his retirement from General Motors in Framingham, MA in 1986 he moved to Barefoot Bay. He was a parishioner of St. James Roman Catholic Church in South Grafton and St. Luke\"™s Parish in Barefoot Bay. He was a member of the Delisle-Goulet Post 92 of the American Legion, a lifetime member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1497 in South Grafton, and was active in town politics.   George was an outstanding baseball player and played in the Blackstone Valley League and also coached American Legion Baseball for many years.   During his retirement he enjoyed many happy years of leisure playing softball in the over-60 softball league. He was an avid fan of Boston sports teams, particularly the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Celtics, and the New England Patriots.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in George\"™s name to the Food Bank of Grafton, 30 Providence Rd., Grafton, MA 01519.   Funeral details are incomplete.
