George Harvey McCray passed away January 5, 2022 surrounded by family at his residence in Lynchburg, Virginia after a long and brave battle with cancer. George was born in Amherst, Virginia on August 25, 1952, a son of the late James H. and Mildred L. McCray.
George spent his adult life in Lynchburg. As a young man, he loved riding motorcycles and had a passion for fixing any make and model car, no matter the problem. He enjoyed bowling and playing pool. From immaculate yard work to precise painting, George was a jack of all trades.
George worked several years at the Lynchburg Foundry, Goode Battery, and Bat Masonry. George served as a helping hand at both Jackson Street United Methodist Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church. He loved being with his family and friends; and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and witty stories.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife, JoAnn Harris McCray; four brothers Charles, Freddie, James, and Lester McCray; and two sisters Virginia Dempsey and Irene McCray.
George leaves to mourn but cherish his loving spirit: his daughters born of his marriage, Danielle and Diane McCray of Virginia; son Derrick Franklin of Maryland; daughters Demetrius Wright and Sandra (Robert) White of Virginia; stepson Derrick (Myline) Harris Sr. of Virginia; Tara (Kenny) Morgan who he raised as his own; three devoted grandsons, Darrian, Demonté, and Aydán of Virginia; four brothers, Andrew of Virginia, Richard (Robin) of North Carolina; Arthur (Harriet) of Pennsylvania, and Henry Lee of Georgia; four sisters, Barbara McCray of Virginia, Linda (Warren) Parks of North Carolina, Shirley Bailey and Bessie (Bernard) Johnson of Pennsylvania; and a host of grandchildren, a great grandson, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
