George Henderson Mccomb

George Henderson McComb, of Westminster/Canterbury Lynchburg, went to be with his Savior on Wednesday, June 12, 2013. He was born May 23, 1919 in Stuarts Draft, VA, the son of Moses H. and Annie S. McComb.  He graduated from William and Mary College in 1940, then enlisted in the US Navy where he rose to the rank of Commander. He served on the USS Thurston, seeing action in the North Atlantic including the D-Day Operation.

He continued serving in the Naval Reserves while beginning his career in education. He did his graduate work for his Master\"™s and Doctoral degrees at UVA. His educational career included teaching at Wilson Memorial High School in Fishersville, and as a school principal in Staunton, VA, Ellicott City, MD, and Lynchburg, VA. His career culminated as Assistant Superintendent for the Lynchburg Public Schools.

He and his wife, Betty, have made their home in Lynchburg since 1965. After their retirement, they enjoyed traveling the world, playing golf in 37 states and 10 foreign countries. They built \"Ben Bee\", a summer home in Coleman Falls where they raised horses and a large garden for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Dabney McComb, of Westminster/Canterbury, daughters Deborah (Tom) Rolfe of Lynchburg, Brenda Beck of San Carlos, CA, son John (Kathy) McComb of Crestview, FL, grandchildren Andrew Rolfe, Kimberly Preston, Aaron McComb, Michael McComb, Keri McComb, Laura McComb, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, June 15, 2013 in Tharp Funeral Home Chapel, Lynchburg with the Rev. Dennis Roberts officiating.   The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be held at 3:00 pm. in the Tinkling Spring Cemetery in Fishersville, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to either Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, 1000 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg, VA 24503, or Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, 30 Tinkling Spring Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939.
