George M. Snead, Jr.
George Murrell Snead, Jr., 90, of Lynchburg died Thursday December 13, 2012. He was the devoted husband of Kathleen \"Kitty\" Dawson Snead.
George was born November 6, 1922 in San Diego, CA, a son of the late George Murrell Snead, Sr. and the late Helen Olsen Snead. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II, Korea, and the Vietnam Wars obtaining the rank of Brigadier General before his retirement. George was a 1943 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. He then obtained graduate degrees from the Univ. of Illinois (MS) and the Univ. of Virginia (PhD). George was also a member of First Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his sons: George \"Mike\" Murrell Snead, III and wife Suzanne H. of Moneta, James Montgomery Snead and wife Vicki H. of Charlottesville, William Murdock Snead and wife Kathy K. of Westerville, OH, and Edward Winn Snead and wife Kathy M. of Fairfax; a sister Virginia S. Trinkle of Roanoke, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son John \"Jack\" Penn Snead.
A Memorial Service for George will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday December 19, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John M. Scholer officiating. Inurnment will take place in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends following the service in the Hume Room at Westminster Canterbury.
