George Michael Herzberg, beloved Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Brother, and Friend, lost his battle with Alzheimer’s Dementia at the age of 86, on Monday, January 27, 2025, at his home in Lynchburg Virginia, where he and his daughter Cheri resided for the last year of his life.

George was the son of the late Ralph and Angie Herzberg (Michalski). George was born on August 10, 1938, in Saginaw Michigan, where he graduated from Holy Rosary High School, Class of 1956. He was married to Judy Herzberg (Hoag) who predeceased him in death in February of 2015. George was a hardworking, loyal, and loving family man.

George was a mason and well-known bricklayer, having been a member of the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers since 1956. George also served in the United States Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960’s. In his retirement he enjoyed painting, taking his dog, Mollie Sue for daily rides in his car, (who predeceased him in death in 2023) and meticulously taking care of his garden and beautiful backyard, which consisted of pears and apple trees, grapevines and a garden full of veggies that he always gave away to whomever wanted them. He never knew a stranger and would have given you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it.

George was also predeceased in death by a son Michael Anthony Herzberg. Surviving children are daughter Cheri Garrett (Herzberg) of Lynchburg VA, Step-son and daughter in law, Michael and Julie Popadich of Washington Twp, MI; Grandchildren Mikayla Stables (Garrett) and her husband Zach Stables, Brooke Popadich, Chelsea Smith and Anthony Smith, along with special niece Terri (Hoag) Schaper who welcomed him to Sunday Dinners and family gatherings quite regularly after her Aunt Judy’s passing. Also surviving are brother Ralph (Bud) Herzberg, Sister-in-law Karen Herberg (Tosch), Sister Kathleen Hadsall (Herzberg), and Sister-in-law Sharon Vollmer (Hoag).

George’s daughter would like to extend her gratitude and appreciation to all the staff at Centra Hospice, especially his Nurse Cara and to his Nurse Aide Tina, who was like family and took such good care of him. They were a great source of support. Cheri would also like to thank their wonderful neighbor Randy Zumer of Saginaw Michigan, who tirelessly helped take care of George and tended to their garden and yard when George no longer could.

The family is having George cremated and will be having an Open House to celebrate his life on May 17th at the Warenhaus Studio in Frankenmuth Michigan. The family will provide further details concerning the event at a later date.

Thank you to Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg for assisting the family with final arrangements.
