George Thomas Burnop

George Thomas Burnop, 91, of Smith Mountain Lake, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2013, at Trinity Mission Health & Rehab in Rocky Mount. He was the loving husband of Evelyn Gertrude Howland Burnop for 71 years.

Born August 20, 1922, in Georgetown, New York, he was the son of the late Edward R. Burnop and the late Mildred Burton Burnop. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edward R. Burnop, Jr.

George grew up in Utica, NY and in 1942 married Evelyn Gertrude Howland. He served in the USMC from 1943 until 1946. Following the Marines, he received a degree in electrical engineering from Clarkson College (now University) in Potsdam, NY. He then spent from 1950 until 1978 as an officer in the U.S. Army, retiring with the rank of Lt. Col. During this time he earned a master\"™s degree in meteorology from New York University. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam and served at many installations in New Jersey, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Virginia and California as well as Japan, Okinawa and Germany. He enjoyed running and playing tennis when he was younger and reading and keeping up with politics as he got older. He and his wife moved to Smith Mountain Lake in 1994 to be near their daughter in Danville.

In addition to his wife, George is survived by one daughter, Joyce B. Lanoue, and her husband, Allen; three grandchildren, Kevin A. Lanoue, of Harrisonburg, Eric G. Lanoue, and his wife, Winema, of Christiansburg, Brady M. Lanoue, and his wife, Joanna, of South Korea; eight great-grandchildren, Margaret E. Lanoue, Allison L. Lanoue, both of Harrisonburg, Ezra R. Lanoue, Zebulon A. Lanoue, Vivian Lanoue, all of Christiansburg, Nathaneal A. Lanoue, Simeon J. Lanoue and Isaac B. Lanoue, all of South Korea; one brother, Robert H. Burnop and his wife, Barbara, of Whitesboro, NY.

A celebration of George\"™s life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 18401 Virgil H Goode Hwy, Rocky Mount, VA 24151, 540-489-3491. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, SML is assisting the family, 540-721-9375.
