Gerrit John van Burk, 78, of Lynchburg, VA, died Thursday, June 23, 2016. He was the husband of Sandra Wershing van Burk, for 50 Years.
Born Thursday, July 15, 1937 in Elizabeth, NJ, Gerrit was the son of the late Gerrit Veeder van Burk and the late Elwyn Beatrice Wasdel van Burk.
In addition to his wife, Gerrit is survived by a daughter, Jennifer McCurley and her husband, Scott, of Lynchburg, two sons, Gerrit John van Burk, Jr. and his wife, Beth, of Ashburn, VA, and Christopher S. van Burk, of Milford, NJ, five grandchildren, and a sister, Gretchen Green, of Brecksville, OH and her 4 children.
Gerrit was a funny, compassionate, quiet man who loved the outdoors. He was a former master gardener, and in his younger years enjoyed hiking the Appalachian Trail, and camping with his friends and family. Gerrit was a member of the Forest Lion’s Club, and a Stephen Minister at Peakland United Methodist Church. In recent years he loved spending time with his grandchildren and family. He graduated from Bates College in Lewiston Maine, and the MBA Program at Rutgers University, retiring from the NJ Department of Labor after 40 years of service.
A celebration of Gerrit’s life will be conducted at Peakland United Methodist Church on Monday July 11, 2016 at 1:30 PM, with Pastor John Vest officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.
